Why GPS trackers use more than GPS

A GPS watch or pendant may use satellite GPS, nearby Wi-Fi networks, or cellular towers to estimate its location. The technology selected depends on where the device is, which signals are available, and whether it has recently reported to the app.

GPS, Wi-Fi, and LBS each serve a different purpose

GPS is normally the most precise option outdoors. Wi-Fi can help estimate a device's location when satellite signals are weak indoors. LBS, which commonly refers to cellular-tower positioning in tracker apps, provides a broader backup estimate when neither GPS nor useful Wi-Fi positioning is available.

Best for precise outdoor positioning

GPS uses signals from satellites to calculate the tracker's position. It performs best outdoors with a clear view of the sky.

Wi-Fi

Useful when the tracker is indoors

Wi-Fi positioning estimates location by identifying nearby wireless networks and comparing them with known network locations.

  • Can help when GPS signals do not reach indoors
  • Does not always require connection to the nearby network
  • May identify the building or general property rather than an exact room
  • Accuracy depends on the available Wi-Fi network data
LBS

A broad cellular backup estimate

In many tracker apps, LBS is the term used for an estimate based mainly on nearby cellular towers.

  • Can provide a result when GPS and Wi-Fi positioning are unavailable
  • Usually much less precise than GPS
  • May indicate a neighbourhood or larger surrounding area
  • Accuracy depends on tower density and signal conditions

What accuracy should you expect?

Outdoors under favourable conditions, a GPS tracker may provide a location within approximately 2 to 5 metres. Around buildings, trees, vehicles, or other obstructions, a result of approximately 5 to 10 metres may be more realistic.

Indoor Wi-Fi positioning varies more widely. It may correctly identify the home, school, store, or building while not showing the exact room or entrance.

Cell-tower positioning is the broadest estimate and may be hundreds of metres away, or farther in areas with fewer towers.

Why the location source can change

The tracker may use GPS while a child is walking outdoors, switch to Wi-Fi positioning after entering a building, and fall back to cellular positioning if neither source is available.

This does not necessarily mean the tracker is malfunctioning. It means the device is using the best location information it can obtain in its current surroundings.

Once the tracker returns outdoors and receives a fresh satellite signal, the map should normally become more precise again.

A map location is not a continuous live video feed

The app displays the latest successful location report received from the tracker. Location timing depends on the reporting interval, cellular connection, available positioning source, and whether the device has moved between reports. A result may therefore remain at a previous location until the tracker obtains and transmits a newer position.

How to get a better GPS result

  • Take the tracker outdoors with a clear view of the sky.
  • Allow several minutes for it to obtain a fresh satellite position.
  • Confirm that the watch has cellular signal and is online.
  • Connect the tracker to a trusted Wi-Fi network when appropriate.
  • Refresh the map after the tracker has reported a newer position.
  • Avoid testing beside tall buildings or deep inside a structure.
  • Check that the SIM card and data service remain active.
  • Remember that a previous location may remain until a new report arrives.
