SIM Cards & Data Plans
Choosing the Right SIM Card for Your Lil Tracker Device
Lil Tracker GPS watches and pendants use cellular service for location updates, app communication, calls, SOS features, Remote Monitoring, and troubleshooting. Choosing the right SIM card helps the device work properly from the start.
For most U.S. customers, we recommend starting with SpeedTalk Mobile. Customers outside the United States cannot use SpeedTalk service and should choose a standalone SIM card from one of their country’s two or three main mobile carriers whenever possible.
Quick Recommendation
The best SIM option depends mostly on where the device will be used. Use the guide below before purchasing a SIM card or choosing a monthly plan.
U.S. Customers
Start with SpeedTalk Mobile unless you live in a rural or remote area, or already know that T-Mobile coverage is weak where the device will be used.
SpeedTalk Mobile offers inexpensive, cancel-anytime plans and works well with Lil Tracker GPS watches and pendants.
Canadian Customers
Canadian customers should order from our Canadian website instead of purchasing a U.S. SpeedTalk Mobile SIM card.
International Customers
SpeedTalk Mobile cannot be used outside the United States.
Choose a standalone SIM card from one of your country’s two or three main mobile carriers whenever possible. Smaller MVNOs may work, but they can require manual APN setup.
Why We Recommend SpeedTalk Mobile for U.S. Customers
Simple, Flexible, and Low Cost
SpeedTalk Mobile is our recommended starting point for most U.S. customers because it offers low-cost monthly plans, no long-term commitment, and a setup process that works well with Lil Tracker devices.
- Low-cost monthly plan options
- Cancel anytime
- No long-term contract
- No need to visit a carrier store
- Works well with Lil Tracker GPS watches and pendants
- Many Lil Tracker watches already have the SpeedTalk Mobile APN preprogrammed
Carrier Store IMEI Checks Can Be Misleading
Lil Tracker devices are unlocked 4G GPS watches and trackers. They are compatible with T-Mobile and AT&T network SIM cards when the correct type of standalone plan is used.
However, some carrier-store IMEI checkers are designed mainly for phones and mainstream consumer devices. A store representative may incorrectly say the device is not compatible, not 4G, or not supported because the IMEI is not listed in their retail database. For carrier-specific guidance, see our U.S. mobile network compatibility guide.
This does not mean the device is locked or incompatible. It usually means the store’s IMEI tool does not recognize this type of GPS tracker or smartwatch. Learn more about why AT&T or T-Mobile may reject a Lil Tracker IMEI.

What Your SIM Plan Should Include
For full functionality, your Lil Tracker device should use a standalone SIM card plan with its own phone number.
| Plan Feature | Why It Matters | Recommended? |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile Data | Required for app communication, location updates, map positioning, and many app commands. | Yes |
| Voice Calling | Needed for phone calls, SOS calls, auto-answer features, and Remote Monitoring where supported by the device model. | Yes |
| SMS Text Messaging | Useful for setup, APN troubleshooting, and parameter reports. SMS is especially helpful for pendants and MVNO troubleshooting. | Yes |
| Own Phone Number | The device should have its own standalone number, not a shared-number companion watch plan. | Yes |
Plans to Avoid
Avoid Apple Watch, Samsung Watch, and Companion Watch Plans
Do not choose Apple Watch, Samsung Watch, smartwatch companion, or shared-number watch plans. These plans are usually designed to pair with a specific phone and are not appropriate for Lil Tracker GPS watches or pendants.
Lil Tracker devices need a standalone SIM plan with their own phone number.
Be Careful With Data-Only Plans
Data-only plans may allow location tracking and app data to work, but they do not support every feature.
Without voice and SMS, phone calls, SOS calls, Remote Monitoring, and some troubleshooting commands may not work properly.
If You Live in a Rural or Remote Area
Most U.S. customers can start with SpeedTalk Mobile without researching coverage in detail.
If the device will mainly be used in a rural or remote area, or you already know that T-Mobile reception is weak where it will be used, check local coverage before choosing SpeedTalk. In those situations, an AT&T-network option may be a better choice.
Recommended AT&T-Network Alternative
For U.S. customers who need an AT&T-network alternative, we recommend looking at Red Pocket Mobile GSMA. Red Pocket Mobile’s GSMA plans use the AT&T network, offer low-cost monthly options, and do not require a long-term commitment.

If you are unsure which network is stronger in your area, contact Lil Tracker with the address or ZIP code where the device will be used and we can help you review the options.
SIM Card Guidance for International Customers
SpeedTalk Mobile service is available only in the United States. Customers outside the United States need a standalone SIM card from a local mobile carrier in the country where the device will be used.
Choose One of Your Country’s Main Mobile Carriers
Whenever possible, choose a standalone SIM plan from one of the two or three largest mobile carriers in your country.
Major carriers are generally the easiest option because their network settings and APNs are more commonly recognized by Lil Tracker devices.
The plan should include mobile data, voice calling, SMS text messaging, and its own phone number.
MVNOs Can Work, but May Require Manual APN Setup
Smaller mobile providers and MVNOs can also work, but setup may be less automatic.
Lil Tracker devices contain many common carrier APNs. If the specific MVNO APN is not already saved, the device may default to the APN of the larger parent network used by the MVNO.
The parent carrier’s APN may not work with the MVNO SIM card. In that situation, the correct MVNO APN must be entered manually before mobile data, GPS updates, and app communication can work properly.
Not sure which carrier to choose? Contact Lil Tracker with your country and the carriers you are considering. We can help you identify the simplest option before you purchase a SIM card.
About APN Settings and SMS Troubleshooting
APN settings tell the device how to connect to mobile data through the SIM provider. With the right provider, APN setup is often automatic or already preprogrammed.
When APN Setup May Be Needed
- Using a smaller MVNO
- Using a SIM from a provider not commonly used with Lil Tracker
- When the device defaults to the parent network’s APN
- Using a pendant or tracker that needs SMS commands for setup
Why SMS Is Helpful
SMS allows certain setup and troubleshooting commands to be sent to the device. It can also help us request a parameter report, which shows how the device is currently configured.
This is one reason we recommend choosing a plan that includes SMS, not only mobile data.

Can international customers use the SpeedTalk Mobile SIM card?
No. SpeedTalk Mobile service is for use in the United States only. International customers should choose a standalone SIM card from one of their country’s two or three main mobile carriers whenever possible. Smaller MVNOs can work, but they may require manual APN setup.

Canadian customers should order through LilTracker.ca. The SpeedTalk Mobile SIM card sold on LilTracker.com is intended for U.S. customers.
Are Lil Tracker devices compatible with AT&T and T-Mobile?
Yes. Lil Tracker devices are unlocked 4G GPS watches and trackers, and they are compatible with T-Mobile and AT&T network SIM cards when the correct type of standalone plan is used.
Why did a carrier store say my device is not compatible?
Some carrier-store IMEI checkers are designed mainly for phones and mainstream consumer devices. They may not recognize GPS tracker or smartwatch IMEIs correctly. That does not necessarily mean the device is incompatible.
Can I use a data-only SIM card?
A data-only SIM may allow location tracking and app data to work, but it can limit important features such as phone calls, SOS calls, Remote Monitoring, SMS commands, and troubleshooting. For full functionality, choose a plan with data, voice, SMS, and its own phone number.
Can I use an Apple Watch or Samsung Watch plan?
No. Companion watch plans and shared-number smartwatch plans are not appropriate for Lil Tracker devices. Choose a standalone SIM plan with its own phone number.
Should I check a coverage map?
Most customers do not need to. If you live in a rural or remote area, or already know that T-Mobile service is unreliable where the device will be used, check local coverage or contact Lil Tracker before choosing SpeedTalk.

For most U.S. customers, SpeedTalk Mobile is the recommended starting point. The SIM card sold by Lil Tracker is the physical SIM card only. After receiving it, you will activate it with SpeedTalk Mobile and choose the monthly plan that best fits your device.
